Among many popular structures for a cheaper and simpler way of life, many enjoy the rustic, independent and self-sustaining appeal of an Off Grid Cabin.

The term off grid simply implies that your home sustains itself instead of being hooked into the water and power grid of the city.

How?

Though there are many methods in harvesting your own self-sustaining power, here are the most popular of the bunch:

gasoline powered generator power  – propane power  – wind power  – water hydro power - solar power 

Gasoline powered generators are wonderful back up sources for energy, but from my own personal experience from growing up with one, they are loud, smelly and can run out of gas without warning.

Propane power will give you heat and cooking power but will not give you electricity.

Wind turbines cost $1000 plus to purchase and install but can be wonderful energy providers (Just make sure there’s a little wind where you live.)

Water/hydro power solutions work beautifully if you live near a powerful babbling creek…if not, this may not be the choice for you.

In quick review of preferable options for energy, solar power ranks the most popular and cost effective option, averaging around $400 for an entire solar set up.
