They are also amazingly safe, surviving fires,
snow storms and floods alike.
In fact, in 1991, Earthbag homes passed the
Uniform Building Codes tests by an astounding
200%!
The earth filled bag fashioned walls also create
an amazing thermal effect as they absorb heat
throughout the day and release the heat into the
structure during the night…energy efficient too!
Basic
Construction of a Earthbag House
50 – 100 pound sand bags filled with sand and
clay are stacked and held together by barbed
wire level upon level.
Plaster is then applied to both the inside and
outside of the structure, filling in the
crevices for added strength.
Framing is brought in to the mix to form windows
and doors throughout.
Though building a Earthbag house is not for
everyone, for the bold and off the beaten path
people out there who want to live more than they
work to live…this could very well be your saving
grace.
Dirty, yes, some work, no doubt…but do Earthbag
homes have my vote? Yes, without a second
thought! Maybe getting our hands dirty to
own our own…is well worth the muddy grime.
Besides, you can always take a nice bubble bath
under the skylight of your own sweet home that’s
all yours.

Note:
Though this may
not be for everyone, for those that don’t mind
taking a more creative out of the box approach
to home sweet home, this is a wonderful and
versatile option.
“I have three
precious things which I hold fast and prize. The
first is gentleness; the second is frugality;
the third is humility, which keeps me from
putting myself before others. Be gentle and you
can be bold; be frugal and you can be liberal;
avoid putting yourself before others and you can
become a leader among men.” ― Lao Tzu
“Frugality is one
of the most beautiful and joyful words in the
English language, and yet one that we are
culturally cut off from understanding and
enjoying. The consumption society has made us
feel that happiness lies in having things, and
has failed to teach us the happiness of not
having things.” ― Elise Boulding
